Welcome to Our World

- pieces in Humanity's jigsaw

  Harley's Page

A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do. (Bob Dylan)

THIS WEEK I AM READING:

'Mrs. Zhivago of Queen's Park' by Olivia Lichtenstein

A hugely enjoyable, witty and well written read about a lady who is bored with husband and jealous of friends who play around, who decides enough is enough and goes for it.

PREVIOUS READING:

'DR. BUCKE REVISTED' by Pearl Hawkins

Lots of Cosmic Consciouness, Quantum doodaas and Gnostism. Pearl has it in for the Christians and their Church (enjoyable) and can get really hung up on her celeb. ancetsor (v. tedious).

"THE WALL JUMPER" by Peter Schneider

compelling narrative on the two aspects of DDR and BDR Berlin in the early 1980s. I was there at that time and so it confirms some very deep memories I am still carrying from that period.

"SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN" by Paul Torday

It's a novel about the Middle East. I am only on page 56 and already the main character has flown to Inverness and is now fishing on the River Findhorn! Already I'm learning about the habits and growth patterns of the wonderful salmon (about time too)

"A SHORT HISTORY OF NEARLY EVERYTHING" by Bill Bryson

I'm finding it hugely absorbing, educational, confirming and life affirming - and not helping me sleep at all well.

"MILLENIUM PEOPLE" by J.G. Ballard

Oh dear, I find that I have already read this one sometime ago. Can't wade through all of that contrived saga again!

"SOCIALISM - A very short introduction" by Michael Newman

Stupendously readable – excellently presented basic facts of political systems which formed the background to the world which I grew into.

"ENOUGH" by John Naish

A brilliant book reflecting on the sheer stupidity of our endless striving for better and more when we already have more than enough. In addition to a wealth of other examples John Naish convincingly argues the case for part-time rather than full-time employment holding the key to the future well-being of society!

"INSIDE THE GLOBAL JIHAD" by Omar Nasiri

A chilling account of how a young Muslim man becomes a mujahidin, then wrestles with his conscience, gives a unique insight not only into modern terrorism, but also the forces trying to stop it. Above all the book shows how many shades of grey there are between the extremes of black and white.'

I think everyone who argues for the forceful imposition of democracy upon others should first read this book.

I resonate with the following:
