My mission statement at 1990:
Images of Enterprise is my way of visually appreciating the enterprise, inventiveness and vitality of industrial and commercial Scotland; the stuff which adds strength and identity to this nation. The intention of the Collection is to encapsulate a visual impression of Corporate Scotland at a particular moment in time, namely the final decade of the 20th century. Those who have accepted my invitation to join the consortium have been selected for the following reasons:
1. they operate a good labour relationship policy.
2. they have a successful operation and their wall graph is upwards
3. they have an active environmental awareness aspect built into their forward planning.
4. they are good representatives of their particular corporate sector.

THE IMAGES OF ENTERPRISE COLLECTION 1990 TO 1999 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX |

Promotional manuscript forword by Sir Iain Tennant, K.T., LL.D.
Lord Lieutenant of Moray - September 1991
Images of Enterprise could go on growing forever - and it will grow for at least as long as Harley Miller continues to capture on canvas the excitement of so many of our Scottish enterprises. His written narratives, introducing each client, are not only instructive and appreciative but are also easy to read. His paintings, depicting the Companies and their Executives, bring to life the dynamic world in which they operate. They will help to refute any thought that Industry in
Extract from the Artist's introduction:
There can't be many people with a zest for life who, upon seeing some huge civil engineering project in action, haven't thought "I would like to be a part of that". Architectural engineering, cranes lifting and swinging girders, giant earth movers, ready-mix concrete trucks all lined up and ready to pour, bridge construction with colourful hard-hatted labour force working high above the water - this is civil engineering at its most sexiest. How could anyone not feel a tinge of jealousy? As an Artist, my way of joining the excitement and enthusiasm of it all is to paint it.
My adopted country has been very good to me; since my arrival it has openly shared its history, culture and warm heart. Nowhere else have I every experienced such an incredible variety of townscapes, landscapes, social environments and widespread enthusiasm for life; it has provided all the encouragement and inspiration any painter could hope for.
All of the resulting paintings are owned and held by their sponsors and the ambition at this time is to produce an illustrated and written record of the Images of Enterprise Collection once the project is complete.
2010 UPDATE
Between 1990 and 1999 I produced a collection of paintings featuring aspects of Scottish business operations and enterprise under the banner, Images of Enterprise. Each one was commissioned by a personally selected Scottish-based enterprise who took possession of their painting when completed. The participating enterprises were identified as the Images of Enterprise Consortium, forty seven in total. Over the intervening decades several of the Consortium have been affected by take-overs, re-structuring, and one or two have gone from Scotland's corporate landscape.
As for the original paintings; many remain on display at various corporate locations, some have been presented to retiring executive and staff, others have been lost. And there have been one or two that have turned up at art sales. It can be assumed that any attempt to bring together a retrospective exhibition of the original paintings would now be extremely difficult.
Luckily, a photographic record does exist and, thanks to recent developments in internet technology, there is now an opportunity for an on-line presentation of the entire Collection. The Business Archives Council of Scotland is interested in this project; their work is the active preservation of records of Scottish business and industry and they regard the proposed Images of Enterprise exhibition as an opportunity to encourage forward archive material which might otherwise be lost to the nation.
To bring these aspects together we are in the process of developing an on-line virtual event web site which will include a painting gallery, and exhibition and conference hall. The Consortium members are being invited to make use of these facilities for biographic and other presentations and live interaction with event visitors.
